Backpacks of Hope

On September 18, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) distributed backpacks to our Dinner Guests. It was like Christmas in September. The backpacks were filled with toiletries, razors, toilet paper and other items our dinner guests were excited to receive. LULAC officers, Patricio Provitina and Jesus Garcia, reached out to the Dinner Program with an offer of support. After meeting with our Program Coordinator, Roxana Cruz, and Board member Mary Anne Gibbons, Jesus and Patricio quickly mobilized their local membership to collect funds to purchase the backpacks and donations of items to fill each backpack. LULAC also made a very generous financial contribution to the Dinner Program.

In October, Gifts for the Homeless (GFTH), an organization devoted to providing clothing for homeless men, women and children, sent several large boxes of warm winter clothing to the Dinner Program. The boxes include warm hats, gloves, socks, sweat pants, sweat shirts, hoodies, underwear, and blankets. Each year, Jay Owen of GFTH reaches out to organizations serving the homeless seeking information on the types and numbers of warm clothing each organization can redistribute to those it serves. Dinner Program volunteers will sort and bag this clothing on November 18 and distribute it to those who attend the Dinner Program’s Thanksgiving dinner on November 21.

Many thanks to these generous donors for your part in making our Dinner Guests challenging lives a whole lot better.
